The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), Hon. Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, has inaugurated a new board for the Abokobi-Oyarifa-Teiman (AOT) Water and Sanitation Scheme.
This becomes the fourth (4th) Board since the establishment of the Scheme in 2006 together with the Pantang Area Water and Sanitation Scheme.
Prior to the inauguration, stakeholder-engagements were organized in the three (3) communities the Scheme serves to elect the Water and Sanitation Teams (WATSANs).
New Executive Members were elected after the inauguration of the Board which took place on Friday, 22nd December, 2023 at the Conference Room of the Ga East Municipal Assembly at Abokobi.
Mr. Evans Sowah was elected as the new Board Chairman with four (4) others taking up the remaining positions; Secretary, Kenneth Nii Amon Antonio, Treasurer, Shaderack Adjei, Organizer, Beatrice Tsakley, and Hygiene Educator, Sarah Anang.
Additionally, the Ga East Municipal Assembly and La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly within whose jurisdiction the AOT Water and Sanitation Scheme falls have one representative each on the Board.
Addressing the Members, the MCE, Hon. Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, implored them to be innovative in their approach in managing the Scheme to ensure their service reach all the communities and residents within its operation area.
"I want to charge the new Board to adopt new innovative approaches to embark on an expansion of the water system to supply water to all the communities within your jurisdiction and to also embark on revenue mobilization to ensure all debtors are made to pay in a friendly yet professional manner to help the Scheme function and serve its purpose", she said.
Hon. Kaakie Mann further emphasized the crucial role of the Scheme in addressing the water and health needs of the people and advised the Board to put in their maximum effort to sustain it.
"I expect you to work assiduously to ensure more revenue is mobilized to achieve this goal and to also facilitate regular maintenance of the pump. This is in line with the attainment of the Goal Six (6); “Clean Water and Sanitation”, of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which enjoins us to “Ensure Availability and Sustainable Management of Water Resources and Sanitation for All.”
"The Municipal Assembly will continue to support the Scheme in any way possible and necessary to ensure that, together we maintain and sustain this facility to serve the water needs of the present and future generations", she added.
The new Board Chairman, Mr. Evans Sowah, pledged his commitment towards enhancing the operations of the Scheme and assured the Hon. MCE that he and his team will not let her down but do whatever it takes make the Scheme thrive and serve the needs of the residents and communities within its reach.
The Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Mr. Nii-Amarh Ashitey, Deputy Director, Mr. Dey Kukubor, and Chief of Abokobi, Hon. Samuel Nii Adjetey Mohenu, were among the dignitaries present at the ceremony.
