A 38-year old farmer based in Kponkpo near Abokobi, Mr. Richard Ageh, has been awarded the Overall Best Farmer in the Ga East Municipality at the 2023 Farmers' Day Celebration held at the T. I Ahmadiyya School Park at Old Ashongman.
Mr. Ageh, a Quantity Surveyor by profession, who farms at Kponkpo, near the Assembly, has 10 acres of maize, 1 acre of plantain, 850 broilers, 4,000 layers, 800 turkeys, and 1,850 snails.
He has been a farmer and agricultural entrepreneur for the past five years.
For his award, Mr. Ageh took home a deep freezer, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), 6 cutlasses, a harvesting crate, wellington boot, Esefort Organic Fertilizer, hermetic grain bags, and knapsack sprayer.
The other awardees were, Akua Amponsah Kyeremanteng of Ashongman Estate, Best Agro Processor, Janet Afekumenyo of Up Jane Organic Farms at Sesemi, Best Livestock Farmer, and Rev. Samuel Adjetey Ablorh, Abokobi, Best Crop Farmer.
Delivering a keynote address, the MCE, Hon. Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, praised farmers, fisherfolks and all in the Agric value-chain for their tremendous efforts in ensuring there is sufficient food and food products to feed the people and help the economy grow.
She encouraged persons who are interested in farming but lack land to approach the Agriculture Department for technical assistance to engage in modern methods of farming at home.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, extolled the virtues of farmers and congratulated them for their hard work which has helped to sustain the economy of Ghana.
The Municipal Director of Agriculture, Ms. Marian Mawunyo Dompey, expressed appreciation to the Assembly for providing the needed support to organize the programme.
She noted that the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs was set to take off and encouraged all farmers and persons interested to visit the Agriculture Office for assistance.
The Chairman for the celebration, Mr. Henry Pethuel Vedjo, an Agricultural Economist, commended the farmers for unrelentlessly working to provide food for the people and support to boost the economy of Ghana.
He expressed gratitude to the Assembly for seeking the welfare of farmers and congratulated the awardees.
